Teams

We have over 200 young players representing the Club and playing competitive rugby through the season.  We are open to all players, boys and girls, from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds and actively welcome and encourage new members to come along and play rugby.

Rugby is a great sport that develops teamwork, fitness, attitude, enthusiasm and competitiveness.  ERRFC will support any family who feel that their child is unable to participate on the grounds of cost.

We love our rugby and look forward to you playing soon.

Under 6

The under 6’s are a lively group of youngsters who meet every Sunday at 10:00 at Parsonage Barn Lane. Some children join us from as young as three years old and they are free to dip in and out as their energy levels and enthusiasm dictates.  Parents are expected to remain pitchside for the duration of the session in case your child has had enough or just needs to see Mummy or Daddy.  Parents from the under 6’s will not be asked to help with the canteen because their youngsters often want their parents within eye distance – best bet is to buy a hotdog and coffee and watch England’s future superstars.

Under 6 Team News:

Good luck to all of the players and welcome to all the new stars! The subscription is payable by the under 6 players, but an ERRFC shirt is included in the first year's subscription. In order to organise this you need to pay the U6 team manager the subscription and he will contact Steve Benson. Steve will then contact Rugby Moves in Bournemouth and you will be able to collect your shirt from them, without charge.

Under 7

This is the first year where we will play competitive tag rugby against other teams.  Speed and ball handling ability are the key areas to develop alongside teamwork and a healthy sporting attitude.

The first year of full contact rugby.Specialist training sessions explaining the techniques will be given with safety a priority.  Playing together as a team, going forwards (as opposed to sideways) are the key areas for development.

Consolidation and improvement – understanding how to ruck and maul successfully will lead to more possession of the ball and allow the team to dominate the games that they play in.  Positions throughout the team and squad will be explored with the view of placing individuals in their best positions, at the same time as allowing the children to understand how each player and position contributes to the overall team performance.

Recognising the difference between defensive play and attacking positions and how to handle both situations will be taught.  Knowing the teams own strengths and weaknesses and how to exploit or compensate both areas will prove invaluable in winning games.  Second row forwards are introduced this year giving the scrum some extra power.

By now the team will know all about competitive rugby having played tournaments for a number of years.  They will have experienced highs and lows and will have won some silverware.  Fitness is key to success and listening to the coaches’ contribution will allow the players to grow as a team.  This will be the last year of all day tournaments.  This tends to be the last year that the teams are mixed, with the girls moving on to their own separate teams – girl power!

Under 13

This is the first year of playing in a Cup competition.   The longer games suit our style but with the bigger pitch and the longer games we have to evolve and develop our style and tactics. We will do this in training, and demonstrate it in matches.  Growth spurts will have to be contended with and rugby should by now be offering a useful outlet for all that excess energy that can come with teenage years.  It is important for teenagers to keep up their physical sports and not to be swayed by computer games and other distractions! Players may be invited to play for Wessex, which is always an enormous privilege.

Respecting the referees at all times is important, and keeping the discipline in the ranks will result in fewer penalties being awarded against the team.  Fitness is paramount because you will come up against opposition with some big and fast guys.  Controlled aggression and a solid commitment to making first tackles will pay dividends, as will a constant willingness and enthusiasm to learn more about the game.  Hampshire selections take place for the first time with some inter-county fixtures.

Under 16

Some of the players will actually look like young men! Physically very strong with bundles of aggression.  Individual skill needs to be matched with team awareness, and quick thinking will often result in a try being scored.  Continued pressure for the whole of the game will usually pay dividends as the opposition is ground down to submission.  This is where a rigorous daily fitness regime sorts the men from the boys!
